The MIEN core project is entirely written in Python, so the source code is relatively readable. All code is provided under the GPL, so you can use and modify it (but remember that the code must remain available according to the GPL if you redistribute it, and that there is no warranty).

MIEN provide a variety of modules, particularly python parsers for several common file formats, that may be useful in other context.
